Hank, I wish you well with your plans , just where are you settling in New Brunswick or have you not made a decision yet?

John it certainly it is a very beautiful part of Canada and you must really do a scouting mission if you require any info just pm me and I will do my best as I'm sure Fland will too . We are going back out around May all being well, really need to sell house, this is the new problem in the UK now.

Its nice to know the thread still interests a few people.

Good luck to you both, be nice to think we could all meet up out there once we all get sorted

Paul,

I will look forward to another full "debrief" on the trip in May. 8)

Hi Paul,

It looks like you have put a lot of work into this, kudos to you. I'm a newbie to this site, and feel like a bit of a fraud as I am neither British, a Trucker, OR Abroad (in any sense of the word). I am *sorta* British and lived in London for a long time, I am about to start a 12 week tractor trailer course so I'll be a trucker soon, and as I have lived outside of Canada for 26 years, and only just moved to Nova Scotia in 2006, I feel like I am living abroad.

Anyway, I live just down the road from Andy in a small town in the Annapolis Valley, (Greenwood) and I am impressed with your overall observations of Nova Scotia. It is a friendly, picturesque place with a fairly low cost of living. (Except the sales tax still kills me...13% on virtually everything. It especially hurts when buying a car!) Your choice of a final location really boils down to the cost of housing vs. proximity to jobs and services. It pretty much works out as a factor of distance from Halifax / Dartmouth (HRM) area; i.e. The costs of housing, property tax, utilities, and availability of jobs becomes lower as you travel away from Halifax.
For long haul trucker jobs, I guess it is not as bad, because you wouldn't have to commute to your place of business everyday as you would if you were an office worker. (If you are out for 8 -10 days, then your commute doesn't matter so much if it is 2 hours each way)

I've toured around much of Nova Scotia and people here really are friendly, and genuinely so... not just the usual 'Have a nice day' crap that you find in most big cities. In the smaller towns, everyone knows everything about everyone else. Sometimes quaint, sometimes a little creepy.

I know Andy has been 'go to' guy for all things NS, but I am happy to help out too if I can. When I finally get on the road, I'm sure I'll be asking a lot of questions about the world of trucking...

Cheers,

Mark

Anyone (in UK) see Billy Connolly Journey to the Edge of the World last night? He was in NS & NB and over the course of the series will be travelling from the Atlantic to the Pacific via the fabled North West Passage.

What I did notice was, with the loss of the fishing (all stocks have been overfished), many people have moved away. Those that have remained now make their living mostly from tourism.

Yeah, I watched most of it, after getting off the phone to my mate.

I'm sorry, but the weather there looked as depressing as it is here, cold, wet, overcast, generally British.

Where is the SUN...

I loved the truck he was driving and the scenery was great. I'm looking forward to the next one.

The sun is currently shining bright on this snowy 1C day in the Annapolis Valley. A few puffy clouds and a light breeze. Aw, hold on a minute... now it's cloudy and about to rain. Or snow. Nope, the sun is back. Oh glorious day.

Welcome to Nova Scotia!

(Have a look for yourselves... http://www.gov.ns.ca/tran/cameras/camdetails.asp?id=Kingston )

I think the Scots and Irish brought the weather with them when they first arrived all those years ago. (I hear Nova Scotia had a climate similar to Florida before they arrived. )

Think they must have all postponed due to the current climate.
